Direct answer
You own a fit block when you can name the silhouette, the ease through chest or seat, the hero size, and which points of measure are frozen. A campaign photo does not transfer that ownership. Brand the block after a remake in size L has been measured, not before.

| You can say this | You are still guessing |
|---|---|
| Library SKU or named pattern | ‘Like the photo, but cleaner’ |
| Hero size L measured | Fit judged on a different size |
| Shoulder, length, rise, inseam frozen | Logo placement already in the printer |
| Library stay vs new pattern decided | ‘Just take it in a bit’ |
The photo lied by omission
Last month a founder sent three studio shots and the line ‘this is our fit’. The model was a size down from the label, the hem was clipped in post, and nobody had a points-of-measure sheet. We can remake a library block. We cannot remake a crop. If the only record of the fit lives in a lightbox, the pattern room does not have a block — it has a wish.
What ownership looks like on paper
Four lines are enough for season one. Silhouette name or library SKU. Hero size (we default the first remake to L unless you say otherwise). One sentence on ease: athletic through the chest, or relaxed through the waist. And a list of measures you will refuse to ‘improve’ after PPS — shoulder width, body length, rise, inseam. If those four lines are blank, you are still shopping, and colour is early.
Library blocks are owned differently from custom blocks
On a library path you do not own the pattern copyright. You do own the decision to stay on that block: colour, branding method, size curve. Changing the rise, the pocket bag or the shoulder slope is a new block. Founders who discover this after the logo is plotted usually pay for a second remake and call it a ‘small tweak’. It is a new pattern.
Brand after the tape, not after the mood
Put the remake on a body in L. Measure. Write the deltas. Then talk about the mark. Heat transfer on a neck that will be recut is scrap film. Silicone on a waistband whose height is still in debate is the same waste. Artwork can wait a week. A wrong shoulder cannot.
A clean handoff into the factory
Email the four lines, the market, and whether this is library or custom. Remake window on library paths is 7–9 working days; fee band USD 80–180 per style, excluding courier and special setup. Bulk colour still starts at 150 pieces per style per colour after PPS. If you cannot yet name the block, ask for a remake of a lookbook style and learn the measures on that garment. That is a cheaper education than a custom proto.
Common mistakes
- Approving a logo position on an unmeasured sample
- Calling a rise change a branding update
- Fitting a size S and grading the story onto size XL without a note
Buyer advice
- Write the four ownership lines before the RFQ
- Measure the remake before artwork is called final
- Read the library-vs-custom note if the ‘tweak’ touches pattern
Buyer FAQ
Questions procurement usually asks next
Can we own a library block?
You own the programme decisions on it — colour, brand, size curve. The pattern stays a library block unless you open a custom path.
What if we only have a competitor garment?
Send it as a reference, inside and out. We will say what can sit on a library block and what needs a new pattern. Do not call the reference ‘the spec’.
When is the logo allowed on the sample?
When neck, shoulder and body length are accepted, or you accept that a fit change after print is a new remake.

Open a sample path on a live block — then confirm fabric platform and MOQ on the RFQ.
